6 New Ideas for Engaging Online Students

New learning experiences require more creative ways of studying and due to modern technology, we can make classes more attractive which will make a lot of people attend. 2021, 21st century, covid19, huge differences in this world, and do students and teachers are ready for these changes? Last year in these times no one could imagine their lives in this way which led to difficulties as it was a big issue for many teachers, (and not only) that was a general lack of student engagement in online classes. But let’s understand that distance education is to provide learning experiences for students, both children, and adults.

A lot of programs began to come to life to prepare teachers in e-Learning classes, as statistics state that teachers do not enjoy their experiences during distance learning.

Perhaps you are a teacher and you want to find more constructive and productive ways to make your classes fascinating or publish engaging training videos people like. This is why I am here to help you.

Online learning can be organized in several ways. Yeah, distance learning is more convenient than you think as you can choose your own comfortable time for joining in the learning process as you buy your course once and you have permission to watch whenever it’s convenient for you. So everyone can complete all the activities at times of their own choosing and learn at their own place. In contrast, the other forms of learning activities are held by video or Zoom/ Skype conferences. You are free to choose which one is more convenient for you.

#1. Experience

This headline is directly related to the experience of the teachers and it does not matter whether they are young or not. It does not matter if they master the technologies or not, it takes time to think about what your students will like based on their knowledge and interests. The E-learning process can be really dull and without any result, if the educators do not know how to make time to help students and encourage them to participate in your classes. More informative I am gonna speak a little bit later.

#2 Opportunity to express oneself

The lack of E-Person communication can lead to really dangerous things. Yeah maybe direct communication allows more, but if you master all the useful tools real life may not be different from a digital one. To know how your students think you can suggest different assignments. It can be in the form of essays, comment writings, debates, talks, etc. Especially when you hold your classes via Zoom, Skype but not in a synchronous way (learning activities by recording video classes ) does not mean that you can not do it in this case.

One more important fact: allow your students to choose their homework- assignments. They may prefer to speak about the topics they want and sometimes you can organize events where you can join and discuss. Yeah, it’s a must to do everything for your students to make their voices heard. One of the examples is to write reviews about the learning experience and content. So you can know whether you need improvements or not. Or, of course, if you are free, allow them to interrupt you while speaking and do not wait for the end of the class as there could be a lot of incomprehensible questions.

Another way to include your students in different discussions you can use the tools that modern technology, like Kahoot bot, provides- by dividing them into small groups and giving them the opportunity to think critically. And for sure students enjoy group projects.

#3 Eye-catching materials

Firstly use “visual” content. Pictures, videos, texts, presentations make the learning process more effective. These kinds of activities are really good for doing webinars, online classes. It is flexible and I guess offers much versatility, that allows students to be more attentive and careful. Sometimes showing videos or presentations catch the attention and make the material intelligible and comprehensible. Yes, do not be afraid to use these elements.

#4 Delivery diversity

Yeah, yeah, what is it? Suggest diversity, man! Do everything to make your courses interesting. Have you ever thought that watching or participating in your online classes sometimes can make your students tired? But what to do to escape from this issue?

Bring in guest speakers to your online course so your audience will not get tired of seeing the same person every single day and hearing the same voice. Maybe this sounds funny, but this is psychology and it’s really okay. Keep interested and surprise alive.

#5 Periodically update course content

Plan your courses always and include all the details that you should share with your students. This will help you to separate all important and no actual topics. If it’s 2021 year and you, for example, still use the same courses that you have recorded in 2019, some parts could be unuseful. The update usually including:

  • The research you have done
  • New data
  • Articles, video content, conference session recordings
  • New trends and practices

#6 Fun

Find time for fun. It can be in the form of games, discussions, watching short videos, or quoting humor. Remember that even the most serious things require fun, so make everything enjoyable. I can not suggest fully what you can do as it is based on your courses’ topic and interests of participants.

Online learning is a “safe place” where everyone who attends classes can share ideas, take risks, and ask for help. At the very beginning of the course, instructors should understand the requirements of their target people, understand their interests, which is the standard for all online programs. Do everything to impact a student’s experience with your courses. Make them interesting! I hope this article was useful. Thank you and good luck to you.
